Weekly Weigh-in #29: We're at a Crossroads

I fully expected a gain today when I got on the scale, but I saw a loss. Actually, I dropped into the 180s, which I haven't seen for ages. Right now though, I don't feel much like celebrating.

Mr. saw a slightly higher number than last week. And after several disappointing weigh-ins, he proclaimed that he's "done." After losing nearly 50 pounds in six months, he doesn't see the point in trying anymore.

I wish I could be the queen of motivation and the Rocky coach who pushes him through this plateau. But it takes a lot just to get me to the Y for a workout and say no to fatty foods at every turn. I'm not sure I have enough energy left to pull him out of his frustration hole. The only person who can do that is Mr., with as much encouragement as I can offer.

Jay
Starting weight: 301 pounds
Current weight: 253 pounds
Pounds lost this week: (.5) pound
Total pounds lost: 48 pounds

Susan
Starting weight: 238 pounds
Current weight: 189.5 pounds
Pounds lost this week: 1 pound
Total pounds lost: 48.5 pounds

You know, 50 lbs is nothing to sneeze at! Jay is awesome for doing what he has already accomplished!
You guys can't let the .5, and 1 lb losses get to you. A loss is a loss. ANY loss is good. (have you looked at how much a half pound of butter is? Imagine that coming off your rear!) Also your body needs time to adjust. We are genetically inclined to gain weight for survival, not to lose it. Losing it is no easy feat.

Also, it's ok to stop and asses for a while too. Maybe Jay needs to practice maintaining for a while. Maybe he will decide to lose more, maybe not. As long as he is happy and healthier than he was, (and he IS! YAY!) it's all good. (Personally, I lost 30 lbs and had to stay there for awhile before I was ready to lose more. I think it's pretty common)

Anyway, I am just a faithful lurker and thought you guys could use some "YAY YAY! Go you!" cheers today. Hang in there!

I was pretty depressed this morning, but after a couple of hours I decided not to give up. All the reasons I want to lose weight are still valid, and I enjoy how I feel when I've lost weight.

I just had a tough week last week and seeing a gain on the scale this morning really hit me hard.

Don't worry ... I'm still committed to getting fit!

Actually Susan, we are pretty close right now. Let's race! I know, I have an unfair advantage. Keep up the good work!

Hopefully Jay can at least set a new goal to maintain his weight with the same healthy habits he's developed. He may find that with that goal in mind he even loses a few more! It would be a shame to let all his hard work go to waste.

Just read your comment. Good for you! I can understand the frustration. Hang it there!

Susan,
I LOVE reading your blogs, the conversational tone is refreshing.

Jay,
I know how it is to feel like crap on the scale - keep up the awesome work! Little tip that helped me remember how much I lost also helped me keep going was to actually hold something that was the same weight that I had lost. It was a "minor" dose of reality when I picked up a 15 pound watermelon thinking, "hmmm...that was on my ass a few months ago!"

You both look fantastic! It's better to lose weight slowly--right? As long as the numbers are going in reverse.

Hang in there!

Jay: glad to hear you are still on board. 50lbs is an amazing accomplishment, keep up the great work.

(and yes, it is work!)

I've noticed that even if you're doing everything right, sometimes the body just pauses its weight loss (or bumps upward temporarily) for a while. I think bodies are more complex than we realize at this point, and there's more going on in there as far as figuring out balance than we can understand through current science. The one thing that's true is that if you keep on with healthy habits, you'll get healthy results, and if you let frustration make you quit, you will become less healthy as a result.
