Early Morning Workouts? Not for Me

On Thursday, I tried a new experiment: going to the Y for a pre-work workout.

I've only done this a couple of times since we started our fit life, and haven't been crazy about it. I'm just not a morning person. But I wanted to give it another shot. Lately, I've been slacking in the evening workout routine. I often run out of steam after a long day at work and an evening chasing my kid around and doing the usual household stuff. Then I don't work out, and don't lose weight.

Well, I had no problem getting up early (I purposely went to bed at a decent time so I'd get enough sleep). I should have packed my bag the night before, since I needed all my "products" to shower and get ready in the locker room. I also felt the need to clean up our kitchen before I left (can't stand coming home to a messy kitchen), which left me fewer minutes to work out.

Still, I made it to the Y a few minutes before 7. I was able to warm up and get in an entire weight-lifting routine. I forgot a few of my essentials (hello--water bottle?) but I managed. Showering in the locker room was a little gross, but not terrible. I walked out feeling good about having my workout over with for the day, and headed to Starbucks for coffee and oatmeal.

After I got to the office, I heard from Mr. Our daughter apparently missed me very much, asking "Where's Mommy?" every other minute. Even when she got to her sitter's house, she was quite clingy and sad. I must admit, I missed her, too. We get so few hours together as it is, with me working full-time, that giving up those precious morning moments seemed like too much--even for one day.

That's when I decided morning workouts aren't for me. I'll simply have to find a way to motivate myself to exercise in the evenings after Cassie goes to bed. Sure, it's going to be tough some days. But it's definitely worth it. I can spend as much quality time with her as possible and continue getting fit.

I know you said Cassie doesn't like strollers, but it seems like such a shame to miss out on an opportunity to spend time with her AND work out at the same time. And not to mention getting to breathe some fresh air. Could you try to revisit the stroller?

Oh yeah, and weight-lifting at home is another good way to work out in the morning.

Hi, did you really have to go to the Y to do the workout. Sounds like another excuse not to do it to me. "Gee I can't go, Cassie will miss me too much"

Do your workouts at home. I have 5 young children-yes 5. The eldest just turned 11 and I am absolutley a hands on mother involved in everything that they do. School, football, soccer, netball, basketball, indoor soccer, swim squad, cricket, you name it we do it.

I also compete in half ironman triathlons. 1900m of swimming followed by 90kms of cycling and 21km of running. I do a lot of training-around 10-14 hours per week in fact. Where do I do it? At home. I run on the treadmill, I ride my bike on the trainer. I do go out for swimming twice per week-while the kids do their swim squad training. Yes it is boring as hell sometimes, there is only so much news you can watch while doing a 100km ride inside. But in order to reach my goals, I do what it takes.

Now you want to get into shape. Did I say that I am a Personal Trainer? I recommend to all of my clients that they train at home whenever possible. It is quicker, no travel time, you can shower at home and you do not, I repeat, do not need heaps of expensive equipment. (unless you want to do a half ironman)

Check out my free website www.fitterfasteronline.com for heaps of workouts you can do at home with no equipment. Let's see what excuse you can come up with to not do these. I do them in front of the telly. My kids love using the stopwatch to time me or count reps for me. Give it a try. I know you can do it, but will you?

Goodluck

I'm not an early morning gal either. I need a couple of hours to wake up so I walk my kids to school, then leave for the rest of my walk. Then fit pushups, situps, etc., in in the evenings when I'm watching tv. Good luck finding a new schedule that works for you!

I am so positively.amazingly. NOT a morning person. But I've recently discovered that I CAN wake up at 5 am and go for a walk (hopefully soon a run) with our dog. I take my iPhone (listen to a devotion) and a flashlight and we hit the streets in our neighborhood in the dark.
I work full time and my boys (6 and 10) have full time evening activities...so working out is a challenge for me. I'm not where I want to be...but I can do this one.

Totes down with the jogging stroller idea. And a girl at work lost her baby weight by getting on the treadmill with her baby in the baby bjorn. Added just enough extra effort to help get the weight gone.

I'm also kind of amazed by the Wii Fit. I know, I know. Kinda cheesy. And it's definitely not as good as a full gym routine with weights and all, but in terms of getting me moving without having to do the whole gym stuff, kind of awesome.

Following up on what Andrea said...

P is the same way about the stroller, so we've started using a wagon instead and I pull her along with me for evening walks. She loves that wagon and certainly feels like she's in control. I'm hoping to add hand weights to walks in the next weeks or so alternating between my none-wagon hand.

And the weather has been so perfect lately that the walks are amazing mentally and physically.

A wagon! Now that's good thinking. Of course, Cassie will probably leap out of the wagon into oncoming traffic -- unless I belt her in there good. She's just a little runner, giggling devilishly all the way.

It's kind of bumming me out that the sun is setting earlier and earlier. I feel like it's nearly dark by 7ish!

Still, I will try to make more effort to exercise and spend time with Cassie. She's quite fascinated by my Pilates DVDs, for about 2 minutes ...
